I'd like to see a rankings by Compete score, which I think is better than Quantcast.

Boston Gal's Open Wallet probably does 5 times the amount of traffic that I do (easily), so I question how good these really are.

I've also never heard of SoundMoneyTips or StockGumShoe, so you can understand my surprise that they are in the top 10.
FIRE Finance said...
Lazy Man:
Here are the Compete scores for:

SoundMoneyTips: Monthly Traffic: 22844

StockGumShoe: Monthly Traffic: 11137

And since Boston Gal's Open Wallet does not have a domain name of its own Compete cannot generate its score!

Overall in our experience so far, Quantcast has been generating reliable data at par with Site Meter and Google Analytics.

Hope this information helps.

Nice list!

I'm pleasantly surprised to get some external objective feedback on how well I am doing and how well personal finance, as a sector, is generally doing.

However, as hinted at by Lazy Man, I think it will take time to discover all the sites that fit into your measured category. If you can do that - there will eventually be less "surprises" hiding out there.
CashMoneyLife said...
Hi Fire Finance,

This is a fun list you've put together. I have noticed quite a few sites that are not mentioned. Blueprint for Financial Prosperity, All Financial Matters, Free Money Finance, and Wise Bread are all very popular blogs.

I wonder if Quantcast doesn't have familiarity with many sites? Still, this is a neat thing you've done, and as with any project of this magnitude, it will need a little tweaking.

It looks like the SoundMoneyTips is really part of Seeking Alpha (http://soundmoneytips.com/page/about_us ), and I would claim that violates the "...strictly to personal finance blogs written and managed by a single owner sharing their personal life's experiences." clause.

As for StockGumShoe, I'm really quite surprised by their traffic, but I'm a little skeptical. Compare it with Jim's Bargaineering.com/articles (Blueprint for Financial Prosperity) - http://siteanalytics.compete.com/stockgumshoe.com+bargaineering.com?metric=uv

For my site, Quantcast explicitly says that it has sparse data, which sounds like it knows it has a problem. It also says my audience is heavily female, which would be a complete shock to me. They give a little more information on their data here: http://www.quantcast.com/interpreting-panels.jsp. I don't have Flash on the computer that I'm on so I can't see what heavily female means, but it would be interesting to compare it to iVillage.

I'd suggest using something similar to Text Link Ads Blog Juice Calculator, which factors in 4 or so factors (Technorati, Alexa (though I can replacing this), and some other things that I can't remember right now).
Lazy Man said...
I understand the reasoning for not counting www.bargaineering.com/articles, but then you can't really count www.getrichslowly.org/blog (GRS). I realize that Quantcast failed for BPFFP and worked for GRS, but that just shows you Quantcast's limitations.

Why include Google PR and exclude Technorati? Google PR is like Technorati in that it measures links and link value and not necessarily traffic.

I'm not saying that Quantcast is particularly wrong about my site, just pointing the flaws in the measuring process.

I didn't mean any disrepect to you for creating this list - it is a very good list. I just want to be of service helping you best measure blogs - even though it's extremely difficult to impossible to do accurately.

Hello,

Thank you very much for compiling this list, but I'm a little confused. You used Quantcast as your source for determining traffic, but this is a service that I've never heard of and does not have correct information about my site. My SiteMeter stats are, as always, at the bottom of the far right sidebar of PoorerThanYou.com. From your update I see that I'm not the only one coming to you with this concern - I hope that PTY will be included in your reevaluation of the list.

Thank you!

Hi Fire Finance,

Thanks for making this list and including all the updates. I know this was a lot of work on your end - especially with all the blogs that are not accurately measured. I think the problem is with the limitations of the sites you are using, which is not your fault of course. Still, I think this is a fun list and one that will spark many a conversation and debate. Again, thanks for your hard work.

Nice info. I used to use SiteMeter but I had to abandon it because my

After reading your fresh comments (after re-compilation of the rankings), the responses are:
- we will add the sites (of those of you who mentioned an inclusion in the list) when we compile it again later.
- the sitemeter list has 37 sites since those were the only ones implementing sitemeter in our entire list of pf bloggers! As our database of sites grow the list will grow provided they have implemented sitemeter and made the data public.
- in future we will implement cut off limits for traffic for all the three rankings. The limits are dynamic and will depend on the no. of sites we are ranking.
- Spelling mistakes will be taken care of.
Thanks a lot for your feedback. Please leave more comments so that we may improve the rankings based on them.

Medicated Money ranked 74 a month in traffic, how is that in the top percentage?
FinGeek said...
That is a great job. I really appreciate the tremendous effort that went into compiling the list. Some observations of my own.

1. No one metric or system is perfect. Each site (Quantcast et al) has its own premises and definitions of traffic. Further they have their own way of measuring them. Let alone being perfect. I would rely only on their relative merits instead of absolute numbers.

2. It does not make sense to update the list sooner than a month.

3. A reasonable cutoff traffic is desirable for a blog to make it into the list.

4. How about consolidating the 3 tables into one? Do we really need data from all the three sites in the first place?

My 2 cents :)

It's a great job, but I also think three separate lists is a bit cumbersome. If you have the skills (or can get some help) a single list of:
blogname,
sitemeter rank & data,
Quantcast rank & data,
Compete rank & data

would be better - ideally with the applet letting you sort by blogname or any of the three rankings.

Wooo.... I could never resist a great list. Nice job! This must've taken a lot of work.

I do have a tiny bit to add about Wise Bread:

"Wise Bread is a popular blog but is maintained by a group and is not strictly related to personal finance."

But isn't Queercents also a group blog?

Wise Bread's four topic areas are "personal finance," "frugal living," "career and income," "lifehacks," and "deals and coupons." With the exception of lifehacks, I think all our topics are traditional personal finance material.

Oh well, we are thrilled to be remembered by CashMoneyLife. =)

Keep up the great work!

Thanks Fire Finance, that will be awesome!

To clarify things, though, I want to add that while many of our writers are professionals (some have financial certifications, some are professional writers, etc), none of them are "staff writers" in the traditional sense.

They don't get paid a salary. Instead, they take home 100% of the advertising revenue generated by their articles. Which, if you think about it, is pretty much how it works for any blogger.

I look forward to the new list!

We did consider Single Ma's Fabulous Financials.
1. This site's data for sitemeter is private.
2. Since it is hosted on blogspot and has .blogspot in its url, so compete cannot generate its data.
3. Quantcast says that it has sparse data for this url and its < 2000.
So we could not rank it.

AHHH! Got me again. I had updated my template to a nifty new one and forgot to reinstall the quantcast tag. So, got caught short. 22K views, but I guess you can't take me word for it :>
However, I am PR 3 if you'd kindly move me up a slot for that one.
Thanks!

Hard work can be focused on anything — at this time, I choose to focus it on my own personal projects and endeavors. I’m retiring from corporate life but not from work.I am eager to try this out so that I have a more flexible schedule as a mother of two young kids. I will be juggling this role with income generating work I will perform on my own terms.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. I believe I’ll be working harder than ever after I quit my job.

I think you should just average in a penalty for the sites that don't make the information available. Just take what their overall score is and add three for each piece of information that's missing. You can even keep track of real score and adjusted for penalties score.
FIRE Finance said...
Note: We republished the rankings once again. There were some sites whose sitemeter data had been made public but we had not been notified. Once we manually checked the sites and updated the data, the rankings changed so we redid the list :). Thanks for your patience & cooperation.
FIRE Finance said...
@Lazy Man and Money
That is a neat tip. If the sites comply, penalties would not be necessary. But in the worst case scenario, your advice might work wonders to make the playing field an uniform one.

Great list. I'd love to figure out how to get my blog higher up in the rankings and break into the top 100! It's fun to see who did make the top 100... some really great blogs are up there. My compete score has been way down lately because I've run out of time to update my blog, but I'm going to focus on updating it now that I've gone through a complete redesign.

There have been some minor updates and corrections. So we are going to republish the ranking in a couple of hours.

@Mercedes of CommonSenseMoney,

Thanks for notifying us with your sitemeter info. Yes it is a lot of hard manual effort to collect data and do the rankings. We appreciate your patience. Sorry!

@Finance Junkie of PluggedInFinance,

It is very difficult to keep track of all those who are moving their blogs or changing their trackers etc. Even though we try but there are some occasional misses. Our apologies for overlooking your site. We have noted that your blog has moved to its own domain as well. Good luck!
SavvyFrugality said...
I'd love to have SavvyFrugality.com considered on future lists. I don't run Sitemeter, however. The site is listed under savvyfrugality.blogspot.com. For some reason I can't get Quantcast to use my regular domain name. I have worked my way up to about 3,500 visitors a month, and roughly 5,000 page views, according to both Quantcast and Statcounter. Those figures should put me somewhere in the Top 100. Thanks!

I'm surprised Financial Samurai (http://www.financialsamurai.com) is not on the list. It's probably one of the best, fastest growing, straight from the gut PF site out there.
